In a shocking revelation, the CBI has accused Manipur Police personnel of driving two women into the hands of a 1,000-strong mob, leading to their stripping, parading, and subsequent gang rape.
This heinous crime occurred on May 4 last year, amidst ethnic tensions between the Meiteis and the Kukis, and came to light after disturbing videos surfaced in July.
The report said the two women and a man managed to get inside a police vehicle, a Gypsy. The man pleaded with the driver to take them to a safe place but was told that “there was no key”
This appalling betrayal underscores the systemic failures in ensuring women’s safety and demands immediate action and accountability. Police in India have succumbed to mob pressure in the past as seen in the Palghar lynching case where the police handed over the victims to the mob.
