A 24-year-old man has been convicted by the Sikkim High Court for repeatedly raping his 80-year-old maternal grandmother.

The crime took place when the victim was residing with her daughter’s family. The victim’s daughter returned from a trip and found her mother missing. She was later found at a neighbor’s house, where she disclosed the assault and mentioned that her grandson had threatened her to stay silent about the incident.

The accused was held guilty under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code, Sections 376(2)(f) for rape of a relative, 376(2)(n) for repeatedly committing rape on the same woman, and 506 for criminal intimidation.

This tragic incident forces us to confront a troubling question: Is any woman truly safe today? This is not just an isolated event but a reflection of a deeper societal malaise. When familial bonds, which should be a source of protection and care, become a stage for such brutal acts, it signals a grave crisis in our society.
