Kolkata witnessed a powerful show of civic solidarity on Wednesday evening as residents turned off their lights from 9pm to 10pm, stepping onto the streets with candles to protest the murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital. The peaceful demonstration aimed to support the doctor’s family and demand justice.
Across West Bengal, citizens in various districts joined the protest, carrying torches, candles, and backlit mobile phones. Organized by the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front under the banner “Let There Be Light, Let There Be Justice,” the event coincided with the Supreme Court’s upcoming hearing on the case.
Protesters called for swift justice, urging the court to expedite the case and prevent further delays. At 9pm, landmarks like Victoria Memorial and Raj Bhavan, along with homes throughout the city, plunged into darkness in a symbolic demand for justice.
