Gives barely veiled rape threat
Uber Driver’s Veiled Threat Highlights Women’s Everyday Safety Struggles
A woman in Delhi recently shared her chilling encounter with a cab driver whose “well-meaning” warnings quickly turned to assault threats. The driver questioned her decision to be out late alone, later adding, “Had you been a guy, I wouldn’t have picked you up at all.”
He continued, asserting that women should not travel out alone at night “because if they get raped afterward, then the drivers are blamed.”.
The ride took a darker turn when he asked, “If I were to do anything to you in five minutes, do you think your mother could help?” The woman, feeling unsafe, had already shared her live location with her mother.
Thankfully she reached home safely and reported the driver to Uber, highlighting a sad reality: While some men might think they’re “advising” women, these comments can push women into survival mode, with safety feeling precarious.
