She was pregnant. She was going to her mother’s house to rest. She was wearing full clothes. She was in the ladies’ compartment. What was her fault?
A horrifying incident unfolded in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district when a 36-year-old pregnant woman was thrown off a moving train for resisting an attempted rape.
The victim was traveling alone in the ladies’ coach of the Coimbatore-Tirupati Intercity Express when, after all other women deboarded at Jolarpettai Railway Station, 27-year-old Hemaraj entered the compartment. Finding her alone, he allegedly tried to sexually assault her. When she fought back, he brutally pushed her off the train.
She sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Vellore Government Hospital.
This attack is yet another chilling reminder of the constant threats women face, even in designated safe spaces.
