This is not the first such instance at Jamia Millia Islamia, one of India’s top universities.
On April 27, 2025, a 22-year-old Kashmiri female student was allegedly molested outside Jamia Millia Islamia’s Gate 8 in Delhi around 9:30 PM. The accused, a mess worker named Abid, reportedly punched the student in the chest, prompting outrage among students who gathered at the university gates. Delhi Police detained the suspect following a complaint filed at Jamia Nagar station. The incident has raised concerns over campus safety and some expressed apprehension that the incident was linked to the Kashmiri origin of the student. However the police have denied any such angle. The university administration condemned the act, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy, while students demanded stricter security measures to protect vulnerable groups and accused the administration of a lax approach.
