Nainital Protests Flare After Elderly Man’s Rape of a Minor at Knifepoint
Nainital: Communal tensions rocked Uttarakhand’s Nainital after a 73-year-old man, Mohammad Usman, raped a 12-year-old girl at knifepoint. The incident triggered massive protests by Hindu groups demanding justice, escalating into vandalism of Muslim-owned shops and a mosque.
According to the FIR, Usman lured the girl, who was on her way back home from the market, by offering her Rs 200. He also offered to drop the girl at her house in his car. However, the accused raped the girl at knife point. The girl narrated the incident to her family, following which a police complaint was filed.
Police arrested him under the POCSO Act, and heavy security was deployed to curb violence, with police assuring strict action. The Nainital Municipal Council also issued a notice to demolish Usman’s illegal property.
