The road to hell is paved with stones of good intentions.
Only that adage can explain what we witnessed this week. A woman came forward and described the extreme sexual & mental abuse she endured for years at the hands of a journalist at a news portal. This caused at least a few more cases to come to light, one including another journalist. But the similarity didn’t end there. Most cases included sexual violence, rape, forced unprotected sex, mental & physical torture and beating. But there is more. All cases were never called out because the abuser belonged to another religion. They didn’t want trolls to make it about religion.
As much as we appreciate their intention of discouraging religious hate speech, we totally reject the path they chose. The path wasn’t even theirs to choose. They owed it to the next victims to speak up. They did not.
Social pressures have always stopped women from reporting SA. Now we are just adding more such pressures. A new orthodoxy to oppress women. Let’s stop this.
