Women’s 33% Reservation to Transform 2029 Lok Sabha Elections

India is on the cusp of a historic shift with the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, passed in 2023, reserving 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies by the 2029 elections. This landmark law empowers women, half of India’s 1.4 billion population, who hold only 14% of parliamentary seats, to drive change on issues like gender equality and safety in a male-dominated political sphere.

The Act’s rollout hinges on a delimitation process, redrawing constituency boundaries based on a new census, delayed since 2021 due to the pandemic. This could reshape representation, with northern states like Uttar Pradesh, home to millions of women and men aged 18+, potentially gaining seats, while southern states like Tamil Nadu may lose some. The census is critical for the 2029 timeline.

This reform ignites hope for women across urban and rural India to lead and redefine governance. Yet, the delayed timeline sparks criticism, with skeptics questioning political motives tied to delimitation complexities. This policy could transform India’s democracy, but its success demands swift action and true commitment to gender justice.
