In a gruesome dowry-driven crime in Faridabad, Haryana, 24-year-old Tannu Kumar from Shikohabad, Uttar Pradesh, was murdered by her in-laws and buried in a 10-foot soak pit outside their Roshan Nagar home. Tannu, married to Arun Singh, since June 2023, endured relentless dowry harassment, forcing her to stay at her parental home for a year. Despite a panchayat’s mediation, the abuse continued unabated.
On April 21, Bhoop Singh, 54, her father-in-law, allegedly strangled Tannu with a dupatta while she slept. Her husband was on night duty, and her mother-in-law, Sonia, was at a wedding. Bhoop buried her in a pit meant for drainage, later sealing it with cement. The family filed a false missing person report on April 25, claiming Tannu, whom they falsely labeled mentally challenged, had eloped. Tannu’s father, Hakim, grew suspicious of the freshly cemented pit but was dismissed by police until June 20, when her decomposed body was exhumed, identified by her clothes.
Bhoop and Arun are in custody, while Sonia and Kajal, Arun’s sister, remain absconding, all charged with murder. This horrific case underscores the persistent scourge of dowry violence and police inaction in Haryana, fueling outrage and demands for justice for Tannu’s tragic fate.
