On June 29, 2025, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, 21-year-old Shraddha Das suffered a horrific acid attack by her childhood friend, 22-year-old Ishita Sahu, driven by alleged jealousy. Lured outside her Awadhpuri Colony home under the pretext of a “surprise,” Shraddha sustained 50% burn injuries, as reported by police, and is stable in a private hospital. Ishita, arrested alongside accomplice Ansh Sharma, faces charges under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (acid attack). The shop that sold the acid was sealed for illegal storage.
Police cite Ishita’s envy of Shraddha’s beauty and career success, including a recent job in West Bengal, as the motive, though deeper investigation is ongoing. Ishita’s reported lack of remorse and mental distress claims by her mother add complexity. The July 9, 2025, case has sparked outrage, exposing the dark side of personal rivalries and raising questions about women’s safety among peers. It demands stricter acid sale regulations and societal reflection on envy-driven violence.
