The victim, a salon manager, was returning home when the accused, identified as Abuzair Safi (30), fired at her inside an auto-rickshaw alongside an accomplice, Aman Sukhla. She was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where she is currently in stable condition. Authorities have registered a case of attempted murder, seizing CCTV and digital evidence. Both men have since been arrested.
Safi allegedly staged the attack in anger over the survivor filing the rape complaint last year. Multiple reports indicate he attempted to contact her repeatedly and resorted to violence when she refused to respond.
The incident highlights serious concerns around the risks involved in granting bail to those accused of sexual offences.
