Punjab: Village Bans Marriages Without Family Consent

Tribalism trumps constitution – again!

Punjab Village Bans Love Marriages Without Family Consent

Manakpur Sharif, Mohali: A village in Punjab has come under the spotlight after its gram panchayat passed a resolution banning love marriages without prior approval from families or the community. The decision, taken on July 31, 2025, states that couples who marry without consent will not be allowed to reside in the village or surrounding areas. The resolution also warns of action against anyone supporting such couples.

The move was prompted after 26-year-old Davinder married his 24-year-old niece, Baby, which sparked outrage among villagers. Following the marriage, the couple was asked to leave, and they have since left the village. Sarpanch Dalvir Singh clarified that the resolution was intended to preserve local traditions and values, and not meant as punishment.

The decision has drawn criticism from rights activists and legal experts, who called it unconstitutional. While neighboring villages have reportedly started adopting similar measures, officials stressed that adults have the legal right to choose their life partners, and the law protects such marriages.
