Uday Bhan Singh, a botany assistant professor at DAV College, Chandigarh, was dismissed for sexually harassing at least five female students, including a minor. Complaints filed on September 12, 2024, described him sending offensive, suggestive, obscene, and vulgar messages via WhatsApp and social media. He asked personal questions, invited meetings outside college, encouraged use of apps like Telegram and Snapchat to clear chat history. He made remarks on students’ physical traits, dressing, and personal choices. He attempted to control their interactions with the opposite gender, offered preferential treatment for compliance, and humiliated or intimidated those who refused.
The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) investigated under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, submitting a report on December 21, 2024, labeling his conduct as “derogatory and reprehensible”. The governing body, reviewing screenshots, affidavits, and evidence, terminated Uday Bhan Singh, forfeiting his benefits.
The UT higher education department confirmed no intervention, as it’s a college matter. A police FIR is under consideration.
