A 24-year-old stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death inside a Mumbai nursing home on Friday after chasing her from the street, then later killed himself.
Sonu Barai, an occasional cook from Parel, attacked Manisha Yadav, 24, around 10:30 a.m. on Dattaram Lad Marg near Chinchpokli. The couple, neighbours in a labour colony, had dated nine years but broke up 10 days ago over his jealousy after she followed another man on Instagram.
Witnesses said the two were arguing while walking when Sonu pulled a kitchen knife and stabbed her. Manisha ran 50 metres, entered Aastha Nursing Home, and collapsed at the reception. He followed inside and kept stabbing her chest and abdomen despite staff and bystanders shouting. People threw stones and sticks, but he continued until she stopped moving.
Later he slit his throat and fell beside her. Byculla traffic constable Kiran Suryavanshi rushed them to JJ Hospital where boy was declared dead on arrival and girl died in ICU.
Kalachowki police recovered the knife and are examining CCTV footage from the street and nursing home. A murder-suicide case is registered. Autopsy reports are pending.
