What started as a teen crush exposed a chilling reality: everyday security cams are more vulnerable than we think:
A 17-year-old boy from Sribhumi town was detained by local authorities after hacking into the CCTV network of a residential gated community to secretly rendezvous with his girlfriend inside the premises. The incident shows critical vulnerabilities in commonly used surveillance systems, as the teen and an accomplice exploited outdated software to access live feeds on a mobile device, allowing him to evade patrols and entry checks undetected for nearly 30 minutes.
Security personnel at the complex noticed the boy’s suspicious loitering near the main gate and conducted a routine inspection, uncovering the unauthorized video stream on his phone. The residents’ association intervened initially with counseling to address the minor’s actions and the risks involved, before handing him over to the police. The breach has prompted an urgent review of the community’s analog-based CCTV setup, which lacks encryption and regular firmware updates—flaws that experts say are widespread in India’s urban housing societies.
The teen faces juvenile proceedings under Assam’s IT Act for unauthorized access, while his friend, the alleged technical aide, remains at large.
