A wedding in Varanasi’s Shivpur area took a dramatic turn moments after the Jaimala ceremony when 22-year-old Chandni Jaiswal refused to marry groom Rohit Jaiswal, a Mumbai-based pizza company manager, following fresh dowry demands.
When the baraat arrived, the groom’s side allegedly insisted that the dowry be paid immediately or the jaimal would not take place. After the bride’s father arranged more cash and the Jaimala was completed, the groom’s family again demanded additional dowry and even insulted Chandni’s father over his financial status.
Angered by the repeated demands and the humiliation of her family, Chandni removed her garland on stage and publicly called off the marriage. She then contacted the police, leading to the baraat being sent back and the groom’s family being taken to the Shivpur police station for questioning. A panchayat meeting was held at the station, and a formal complaint was filed as the bride’s family stood firmly with her decision.
