Bangalore: A week after a 34-year-old software professional was found dead in her rented apartment in Ramamurthy Nagar, Bengaluru police have confirmed it was a case of murder and arrested an 18-year-old neighbour.
The woman, Sharmila DK, was found dead on January 3 after a fire broke out inside her flat. Police initially suspected death due to suffocation caused by the fire and registered an Unnatural Death Report.
However, forensic findings and technical evidence later raised suspicion that the fire was deliberately set.
Following a detailed investigation, police arrested the teenager on January 11. According to investigators, the accused allegedly entered the victim’s flat at night and attempted to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he allegedly suffocated her, leading to her death, and later set fire to the room to destroy evidence.
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder and destruction of evidence. Further investigation is underway.
