How Media Bias Works

On 5 Feb, Gujarat Rural Police raided an illegal liquor party at a private villa in Safal Nirvana Greens near Sanand, Ahmedabad. The gathering was organised to celebrate a 25th wedding anniversary and took place despite Gujarat being a dry state where the sale and consumption of alcohol are banned.

Police detained 81 people — 43 men and 38 women — and seized foreign liquor, hookahs, cars and mobile phones worth crores. All were booked under the Gujarat Prohibition Act.

While men and women were equally present and faced legal action, many media outlets chose to show mainly women’s faces in videos and reports. This selective portrayal shows gender bias and social shaming of women, even when both genders were involved in the same event.
