This Seconds Long Video Ended Their Lives

In May 2012, a cellphone video from a remote village in Kohistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, showed five teenage girls clapping and singing at a wedding while a few young men danced nearby. There was no nudity or violence—just a brief moment of celebration.

However, local elders reportedly deemed the video a violation of tribal norms and declared that the girls had brought “shame” to their families. A jirga allegedly ordered their deaths, and reports soon surfaced that the girls had been shot and buried.

Years of denial, intimidation, and stalled investigations followed. In 2019, authorities confirmed that at least three of the five girls had been killed, with later investigations indicating all five were murdered. Several men, including family members, were eventually convicted, ending a long and troubling pursuit of justice.
