Moral Policing Disguised As Work Place Banter

Los Angeles: In 2016, an incident occurred on the morning news show of the KTLA channel. During a live broadcast, meteorologist Liberte Chan was handed a cardigan by her co-anchor Chris Burrous.

Chris said that viewers had sent emails complaining that Liberte’s sleeveless black dress was not appropriate. Liberte was surprised but handled the situation by putting on the sweater during the broadcast.

The incident was later called “Sweater-Gate.” At that time, it became widely discussed across the United States. Liberte wrote on her blog that it was meant as a friendly joke, but some people made negative comments about her body, which were widely criticized. Time magazine described the incident as an example of the unnecessary scrutiny women face regarding their clothing on television.
