Kolkata Police releases man accused of flashing the protesting women
Outrage in Kolkata: Woman Sexually Harassed During Protest, Police Allow Perpetrator to Leave
During a protest against the Kolkata rape-murder case, a man allegedly flashed his private parts at a woman, sparking widespread outrage. The incident occurred near the Esplanade crossing, one of the city’s busiest intersections.
Other protestors apprehended the man and contacted nearby police personnel. According to India Today, sources revealed that the police identified the man as a local with a history of mental illness and subsequently allowed him to leave.
This decision enraged the protestors, who began to agitate against the police, demanding immediate action against both the officers involved and the accused man.
Driven by anger and frustration, protestors gathered outside the deputy commissioner of police’s (central) office, calling for justice and accountability.
The woman filed a complaint, and a case has been registered under section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify and locate the accused.
A combination of many such actions by Kolkata police has raised doubts about their sincerity in dealing with the crisis.
