In a troubling case in Jabalpur, a man posing as a police officer has been extorting women students from Government Mankunwar Bai Women’s College by accusing them of sharing obscene content online. The impostor, who identified himself as “Officer Vikram Goswami,” has targeted dozens of students, threatening them with legal action unless they pay him money, according to police officials.
The man allegedly used AI-generated images and videos to falsely accuse the women and demanded payments of ₹ 2,000-3,000 from some students to avoid prosecution. The scam has raised concerns about how he accessed the students’ phone numbers. He sent objectionable content to the students’ phones and threatened to send a police team to their homes if they didn’t comply.
College authorities, alerted by the students, contacted the police. An FIR has been lodged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Police are investigating the use of AI technology in this case and are working to identify the fraudster.
