False cases hurt genuince cases! They also hurt innocents!
A special court in Lucknow has sentenced Rekha Devi from Barabanki district to seven and a half years in prison for filing a false gangrape case under the SC/ST Act. She was also fined ₹2,01,000.
In June 2021, Rekha had accused two men—Rajesh and Bhupendra—of gangrape and threats to her life. During the investigation, it was found that the allegations were fabricated to exact personal revenge. The police gave the accused a clean chit and recommended legal action against Rekha.
One of the accused, Bhupendra, passed away during the proceedings. The court ordered that the fine be distributed equally between Rajesh and Bhupendra’s family.
The judge also directed that any compensation Rekha may have received from the state be recovered. He recommended that in future, relief funds should be disbursed only after police file a chargesheet, to prevent the misuse of laws meant to protect real victims.
According to reports, Rekha had been in a consensual relationship with one of the accused, and the false complaint followed a bitter fallout.
