Manojit Mishra, a 31-year-old with an 11-year criminal record including attempted murder and assault, was hired as a contractual staffer at South Calcutta Law College just 45 days before gang-raping a 24-year-old student on June 25, 2025.
Recommended by a committee led by TMC MLA Ashok Kumar Deb, Mishra’s employment despite his history of crimes—ranging from armed assault in 2017 to threatening a businessman in 2018—has sparked outrage.
The brutal attack, confirmed by CCTV and medical evidence, has led to Mishra’s arrest along with two accomplices, but questions remain: How was a known criminal given power over students?
