Just Don’t: You Won’t Dance Semi-naked in Front Of Your House

he serene Himalayan valley of Sissu in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district, once a tranquil cultural haven, has increasingly resembled a chaotic playground for some tourists.

Shirtless poses atop vehicles, disruptive loud behavior, and unruly crowds at spots like the Sissu parking area have transformed the peaceful village into what locals describe as a circus. The surge in visitors, fueled by improved access through the Atal Tunnel, has placed immense pressure on this small community, eroding the calm atmosphere and disrespecting local sensibilities.

In response, the Sissu Gram Panchayat, has imposed a complete ban on all tourism activities from January 20 to February 28. This 40-day suspension covers sightseeing, adventure sports, stays in hotels or homestays, and any recreational pursuits, allowing uninterrupted observance of sacred winter rituals and festivals such as Halda and Losar. By prioritizing cultural dignity, faith, and community peace over short-term tourism revenue, the locals are sending a clear message: responsible tourism is essential, and sacred spaces must be respected to preserve the region’s timeless heritage.
