At 60 years of age, Sister Lucy Kalapura has embarked on a remarkable new chapter by enrolling as a lawyer with the Kerala High Court Bar Council, receiving her enrolment certificate in a ceremony where she was introduced simply as Lucy KS.
Lucy began studying law in July 2022, a year after retiring as a mathematics teacher, and completed her degree from Sree Narayana Law College in Ernakulam. Her legal career follows years of conflict with church authorities after her involvement in protests against the now-acquitted Bishop Franco Mulakkal in a high-profile rape case and her subsequent expulsion from the Franciscan Clarist Congregation — a move the church attributed to “lifestyle violations.”
She said the achievement is the result of a hard journey and expressed her intention to support women facing injustice as she begins practice, even as her long struggle with religious authorities continues to draw attention.
