Sometimes the Oppressed Learn From the Oppressor

Lateral violence happens when oppressed groups internalize the behavior, fears, and power structures of the people above them — and then reproduce them when given temporary power over someone else.

What disturbed us most about this incident was not just the aggression itself, but how accurately these girls identified the deepest fear embedded in the imagination of Indian women: sexual violence.

Oppression moves downward and sideways.
