Prominent Chinese #MeToo Activist Jailed: The Fight for Justice Continues

Sophia Huang Xueqin, a leading voice in China’s #MeToo movement, has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for “subversion against the state.” Alongside labour activist Wang Jianbing, who received a three-year sentence, Huang faced a closed-door trial nearly 10 months ago.

Known for her groundbreaking reports on sexual abuse and speaking against misogyny in newsrooms, Huang’s arrest came as she was about to start a UK-sponsored scholarship. Supporters argue their detainment is due to their activism and social forums.

Both endured solitary confinement for almost 1,000 days before their trial began in September 2023.
