JNU dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following an internal inquiry into s*xual hrassment complaints filed by 11 female students in May 2026. The students reportedly said that he invited them to his on-campus residence under the pretext of meetings, made s*xually suggestive remarks and engaged in unwelcome physical contact. The university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), which handles complaints under the POSH Act, reportedly found a recurring pattern of inappropriate conduct and an intimidating learning environment for female students.
On October 11, Delhi Police registered an FIR against Akoijam in connection with the allegations. He appeared for questioning on October 15 and said he would cooperate with the investigation. Akoijam has denied the allegations and described his dismissal as a “witch hunt,” claiming he was not given an adequate opportunity to respond to the ICC’s findings. The police investigation is separate from JNU’s internal proceedings under the POSH framework.
The case has raised questions about how educational institutions handle POSH complaints, protect students who report harassment and ensure accountability while following due process. The JNU Teachers’ Association has questioned the procedure followed in the dismissal, while Akoijam has indicated that he intends to challenge the decision.
