A 21-year-old man, identified as Hemanth alias Dummu, att*cked a Class 10 student with a running chainsaw inside her classroom at a government school in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, on October 31. According to preliminary police investigations, the accused was a distant relative of the girl and held a grudge against her after she rejected his marriage proposal. She had warned him that she would inform her parents about his advances. On the day of the incident, he entered the school carrying a chainsaw. As repair work was reportedly underway, the security guard mistook him for a worker and allowed him inside. He then entered the classroom during a lesson and att*cked the girl in front of her classmates.
The girl suffered severe injuries. Another student was also seriously injured while trying to save her. Both were rushed to hospital, for specialised treatment. Doctors performed emergency surgery, and their condition was reported to be stable.
On November 1, police traced Hemanth to the Atmakur forest area. According to police, he attempted to escape and att*cked officers. Police opened fire, sh*oting him in the lower body. He was taken to hospital, where doctors reportedly warned that his injuries could lead to the amputation of one leg.
