Local Language over Safety: Misplaced Priorities of Mumbai Auto Drivers Language Test
The Maharashtra Transport Department has sparked debate by requiring auto drivers in Mumbai to pass a functional Marathi test to keep their driving permits. Commuters primarily need safe, reliable rides rather than fluent conversation, making local language fluency an unnecessary bureaucratic hurdle for thousands of drivers.
Driving safety and traffic compliance test would be far more appropriate. Given Mumbai’s congested roads and frequent traffic violations, testing drivers on defensive driving, road safety rules, and meter fairness would offer far greater benefits to public safety.
