Shabnam Ali of Amroha could become the first woman to be get Capital Punishment in independent India.
She has spent more than 18 years in prison on d*ath row after her conviction in a disturbing family m*ss*cre.
In April 2008, Shabnam and her boyfriend Saleem m*rdered seven members of her family in Bawankhedi village of Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. They first sedated the family members before the crime. The victims included her parents, two brothers, sister-in-law, niece and a 10-month-old nephew. At the time of the crime she was pregnant and later gave birth to their son while in jail. The couple carried out the cr*me after the family opposed their relationship.
Both Shabnam and her boyfriend Saleem were sentenced to d*ath by the Amroha court in 2010. The Allahabad High Court and Supreme Court upheld the sentence, and earlier mercy petitions were rejected. Legal processes have so far delayed any final execution.
