India’s Cancer Crisis: The Alarming Reality for Women

3 out of 5 cancer patients in India succumb to the disease.

A new study by ICMR, based on GLOBOCAN 2022 data, has revealed a grim reality—India has the highest cancer mortality-to-incidence ratio (64.47%) among the top 10 countries with the most cases. This means cancer patients in India are more likely to die than in countries like the US (23.81%) and China (50.57%).

Women at Higher Risk
Breast cancer is the most common among Indian women (31.1%), followed by cervical (19.6%) and ovarian (7%) cancer. Tragically, breast (24%) and cervical cancer (20.6%) are also the leading causes of cancer deaths among women.

With nearly 9 lakh cancer deaths in 2022, India ranked second only to China. The numbers highlight the urgent need for better healthcare access, early detection, and stronger cancer care policies.
