A grim incident shook Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, on July 27, 2025, when a man preplanned the murder of his 49-year-old mother, Yashoda Devi Sharma, fueled by resentment over her remarriage six years ago. Luring her to a local market under the pretext of buying medicine, the suspect strangled her until she was unconscious, then trampled her with an SUV borrowed from a friend, abandoning her body near the Khadiya bridge over the Yamuna river. The calculated attack, triggered by village taunts about her second marriage, has left the community in shock and exposed deep familial discord.

Police swiftly responded, arresting the suspect, her son Kaushal, along with two accomplices on August 2, while a search continues for three others involved. Reported on August 4, authorities identified the victim after circulating her photos, confirming the preplanned nature through witness accounts and evidence. A post-mortem is underway, and increased patrols have been deployed to maintain order. The arrests signal progress toward justice, though the brutal act has left the town reeling as of August 5, 2025.

Remarriage for women in Indian society is often met with social stigma, judgment, and resistance, as traditional norms prioritize a woman’s marital status over her happiness. Many women face criticism and lack of support when seeking a second chance at companionship, highlighting deep-rooted gender biases.
