Shame: Language is Now an Excuse for Harassment

On August 9, 2025, police and protesters clashed in central Kolkata during the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ rally, organized to mark one year since the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College, led by the victim’s parents.

The victim’s father reported that women police personnel assaulted his wife, causing head injuries. Hospital officials confirmed she was admitted and later discharged in stable condition. The father also stated that police delayed her admission and restricted access to visitors. The clash left more than 100 people injured, according to organizers and hospital sources.

The protests highlighted the frustration of doctors and other groups who argue that the promises made after the initial incident and nationwide strike have not been fulfilled, and concerns about unsafe working conditions were not addressed.

The closure of the case by the Central Bureau of Investigation without a supplementary chargesheet also drew criticism from the victim’s parents.
