Dreamed of becoming a police officer: Minor girl raped and murdered after Class 10 exams, secures first division posthumously

A 16-year-old girl was raped and murdered soon after Assam’s Class 10 exams ended.

The girl’s parents filed a police report when she disappeared on March 5. Her body was found in a pool of blood close to the New Bongaigaon Railway Market on the evening of March 8.

Guwahati-based child rights activist said “A few days after her exams, she was raped and killed by a criminal, who brutally crushed her dreams and aspirations. Her parents called to say they are proud of her”.

The death of the girl sparked protests, prompting the police to install barricades in certain areas of Bongaigaon town in western Assam. Following an
investigation, a young man was arrested for reportedly kidnapping, imprisoning, and sexually assaulting the girl, along with his friends.

The girl’s parents said she dreamed of being a police officer, and though they struggled to afford her schooling, they tried to fulfill her dreams.

Every girl deserves to grow up and thrive in a society without fear, crime, and violence. It’s urgent that we develop a comprehensive mechanism to ensure this becomes an undeniable reality.

We owe it to our daughters !
