From OT to WhatsApp: Patient’s Face and Private Images Shared

A disturbing situation from Kaushambi has sparked outrage after a young woman’s privacy was violated inside a government medical college. The 22yo patient was admitted to the gynaecology department on April 26 for treatment of a Bartholin cyst and underwent surgery under medical supervision. However, images taken during the procedure—clearly showing her face and intimate body parts—were later circulated on WhatsApp groups. The matter came to light after a member of the State Women’s Commission noticed it and raised the issue.

This has raised serious questions about medical ethics and patient safety within hospitals. Operation theatres are meant to be strictly controlled and confidential spaces, yet in this situation, someone present during the surgery captured and shared highly sensitive visuals without consent. This act not only strips the patient of dignity but also points to a complete failure of internal protocols, professionalism, and basic human empathy.

Following the outrage, police have launched an investigation under senior supervision to identify who took the photos, who was present in the operation theatre, and how the images spread. The hospital administration has admitted a major lapse and assured strict action, while the matter has drawn attention from authorities and women’s rights bodies. Beyond this, it exposes a deeper issue—how easily trust can be broken in spaces where people are at their most vulnerable.
