A 37-year-old government doctor, Dr. Minakshi, was found dead at her rented home in Jalandhar, Punjab. She worked at Civil Hospital in Kapurthala, while her husband, Dr. Piyush Sood, runs National Eye Care Hospital on Kapurthala Road. The couple got married in 2018 and had been living separately since last year.
According to a complaint filed by her father, Parmod Kumar, Dr. Minakshi had taken a ₹35 lakh loan soon after marriage to help start her husband’s eye hospital. The family said problems began in 2023 after she found out about his extramarital affair. They also said that she faced physical abuse and moved out after a strangulation attempt in 2025. Later, while planning to buy a house, she checked her CIBIL report and found that loans worth around ₹2.5 crore had been taken in her name without her knowledge. She was threatened when she asked her husband and father-in-law to remove her name from the loans.
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case against Dr. Piyush Sood under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abetment of s*icide. According to the FIR, the affair, abuse and financial misuse caused severe mental stress, which led to her death. Police are investigating the case.
