Indian construction worker Vipin Kumar (47) has been rewarded honorary citizenship by the Romanian city of Craiova for his heroic rescue of a 5-year-old girl from a frozen lake in January 2026.
Kumar jumped into the icy waters at Nicolae Romanescu Park without hesitation, holding the child above the freezing surface for nearly 30 minutes until rescuers arrived. Both suffered hypothermia but made full recoveries.
Kumar, who arrived in Romania in 2025 for construction work, described it simply as a human duty. His story highlights a side of India that rarely makes headlines — one rooted in courage, compassion and selfless service. Yet such inspiring acts often receive far less attention than narratives that portray the country negatively.
