A 23-year-old woman, G Sushmita, who was 5 months pregnant, d*ed by su*cide in Telangana after facing prolonged physical and mental harassment by her husband, G Abhilash, and mother-in-law, Laxmi.
Victim’s mother, G Janabai, had visited her daughter’s marital home in to discuss the traditional pregnancy (baby shower) ceremony. During the meeting, an argument broke out, during which the husband, Abhilash — a bangle seller — questioned the paternity of the unborn child and demanded a DNA test. The complaint further says that Sushmita, had been subjected to repeated abuse and assault throughout her 18-month marriage.
Two days after the family meeting, on June 24 evening, the woman was found dead at her in-laws’ house.
Following the complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, police arrested the husband, G Abhilash, and mother-in-law, Laxmi. A case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS, including those related to cruelty by husband/relatives and abetment of su*cide. The investigation is currently underway.
