On 30 September, 20yo Himashree Boro, from Guwahati, Assam, travelled to Visakhapatnam with a dance troupe. On her return journey she boarded the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express in coach S2 on 5 October. The train was scheduled to reach Guwahati on 7 October.
At around 2:39 am on 6 October, Himashree called a friend and also spoke to her family, saying she felt unsafe because several men were around her and some were making inappropriate gestures. The call got disconnected and her phone was switched off. Her friend immediately informed the Government Railway Police in Guwahati, and a complaint was also lodged through the railways helpline. Her belongings were later found in the S2 coach, but she was missing.
A CCTV footage showed Himashree on the platform; an unidentified man approached her, appeared to speak to her, tried to board the train and then got off.
On 8 October, railway police recovered her body near the tracks in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. The Government Railway Police (GRP) has said in a preliminary inquiry that she may have fallen from the moving train. Police are still investigating the full circumstances of her d*ath. The body has been handed over to her family after post-mortem.
