“Forgive, forgive, forgive — you have to draw a line somewhere,” said Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta while questioning leniency towards convicts facing the death penalty.
During a hearing on a convict’s plea for premature release, Justice Datta recalled a past case in which a father convicted of r*ping and m*rdering his elder daughter had his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment. After being released on parole, he m*rdered the mother, who had testified against him.
The judge questioned whether the judiciary’s approach to leniency needed to change. The Supreme Court reserved its verdict in the premature-release case.
