If Even Statues Aren’t Spared, What About Women?

Paintover the graffiti, but who will paint over the mindset?

Maharashtra: In Shanti Park, Mira Road, statues depicting women’s education, learning and dreams have been installed. One of the statues is shown holding a book. However, some people wrote a highly obscene and offensive phrase in English on the statue, reading, “Remove your panties.”

The artwork, which was meant to promote women’s education and dignity, was targeted with sexist and degrading graffiti.

After a woman highlighted the issue by sharing its video on social media, municipal corporator tarren mendoca reach the spot, removed the offensive writing by painting over it with white paint.

But how many such statues can simply be cleaned? What needs to change is the mindset that refuses to see women—even as symbols of education and dignity—with respect.
