On August 5, 2025, Rahul Kumar, a 25-year-old second-year BSc Nursing student at Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), was shot dead by his father-in-law, Premshankar Jha, on the college campus. The incident occurred in front of Rahul’s wife, Tannu Priya, a first-year nursing student, who said her father fired a single shot at Rahul’s chest after a brief exchange. The couple had married four months earlier, against Tannu’s family’s wishes, reportedly due to caste differences, which police suspect as the motive.
Following the shooting, angry students attacked Jha, who was hospitalized and later shifted to Patna for treatment. Tannu claimed her father and other family members, including her mother and brothers, might be involved, citing prior tensions over her marriage. Darbhanga police have filed an FIR against Jha and three others for murder and conspiracy, while also reviewing an earlier complaint by Jha against Rahul’s family. The incident led to protests on campus, briefly disrupting the emergency department.
The investigation continues to explore the full circumstances, including family disputes and caste-related issues, as authorities work to ensure justice for Rahul’s death.
