Woman Assaulted & Dragged on the Streets of Bihar, 8 Arrested

A woman in Ajaypur village of Nalanda district in Bihar was dragged, beaten, harassed, and filmed by a mob on March 26. The video of the attack went viral. She is a mother of three, and her husband works as a daily-wage labourer in Pune. She said she had gone to recharge her mobile phone with a technician when some villagers saw them together and started accusing them of having an affair.

The crowd locked the shop gate, surrounded her, and started attacking her. They dragged her on the street, harassed her, and even recorded videos of the assault while she cried and begged for help.

She managed to escape through a blocked window, but the mob continued to beat her, tried to strangle her, and even forcibly apply sindoor on her forehead, she told the police.

After the video spread, she filed a police complaint. Bihar Police arrested Ashok Yadav and Matlu Mahto (also called Navneet Kumar Narottam) from the village, and six more people later, making a total of eight arrests. Police are still trying to catch the others seen in the video.

An FIR was filed under sections of the law for assault, sexual harassment, and related crimes.

Her husband came back to the village after learning what happened, and police said they are making sure the family is safe while the investigation continues.
