A shocking case of dowry violence has emerged from Kanpur, after a video of a woman being brutally beaten went viral. The woman, originally from Prayagraj, was married in 2020 to Himanshu Dubey, an IT manager. After marriage, her in-laws started demanding ₹20 lakh and 2 bigha land. When the demand was not fulfilled, she was continuously harassed and beaten by her husband and in-laws, including her father-in-law Sushil Dubey, a retired railway clerk, along with other family members.
On Friday, when she returned to her in-laws’ house with her brother Rishikesh Pandey, her father-in-law started abusing her and then attacked her brutally. He pushed her to the ground, beat her, tore her clothes, and even assaulted her private parts. He then dragged her by her hair onto the street while she screamed for help, and even threatened those who tried to intervene. Her 5-year-old daughter was present in the house and witnessed the incident.
The woman also claimed she was earlier confined and constantly tortured. After the video went viral, police registered an FIR, and Sushil Dubey, her father in law, has been arrested. An investigation is currently underway.
