The 2020 Sathankulam custodial deaths case remains one of the most disturbing instances of police brutality in India, where a father and son, P. Jeyaraj and J. Bennix, were arrested in Sathankulam during the COVID-19 lockdown for allegedly violating shop timing rules, but later died after being brutally tortured inside the police station. The incident sparked massive outrage across the country, following which the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a detailed probe. Medical reports and evidence pointed towards severe custodial violence, making it clear that the deaths were not natural.
A crucial turning point in the case came from the testimony of woman police constable R. Revathi, who was present at the station and chose to speak the truth despite being part of the same system. She gave a clear eyewitness account of the brutal assault, helping the court understand what actually happened behind closed doors. Her statement strongly supported the medical evidence and played a major role in establishing the guilt of the accused officers. Based on the evidence and testimonies, a Madurai court in April 2026 sentenced nine police personnel to death, making it a landmark judgment and a strong message that no one is above the law.
