“I Made A Mistake” Doctor Says After Assaulting Minor

On 29 May, a 15-year-old girl from a nearby village in Kurukshetra accompanied her father to Loknayak Jayaprakash (LNJP) Civil Hospital for his treatment. While there, the girl complained of stomach pain and was examined in the OPD by consultant physician Dr. Shailendra Kumar Shaili. The doctor admitted her to the female ward, later took her back to the OPD, and sexually assaulted her multiple times. When the girl started bleeding, she was shifted to the emergency ward, where she disclosed the incident to senior doctors.

Following the girl’s complaint, Dr. Shaili fled the hospital. Kurukshetra police arrested him on 1 June under relevant sections of the POCSO Act. The accused reportedly confessed to police, saying “I made a mistake.” The Haryana Health Department had already terminated his services. Reports also emerged that the doctor had faced a similar rape allegation in 2017.

On Sunday, Haryana State Women’s Commission Chairperson Renu Bhatia visited LNJP Civil Hospital and strongly rebuked the Principal Medical Officer Dr. Sarah Agarwal and on-duty nursing staff for serious lapses in supervision and security. She questioned why the minor was left unattended, why no female staff was present, and why staff ignored warnings from another patient. Bhatia described the incident as extremely painful and shameful, demanded accountability, and announced she would recommend action against the hospital administration.
