“I Have Prepared Food, Please Eat It”

Government teacher’s last message before ending her Life

A 31-year-old Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher, Anvita Sharma, took her own life in her Ghaziabad home on Sunday, leaving behind a haunting message: “He married my job, not me.” Her husband, Gaurav Kaushik, a doctor, and father-in-law, Surendra Sharma, were arrested after her family filed a dowry harassment case. Her mother-in-law, Manju, remains absconding.

Anvita’s final WhatsApp note to her brother revealed years of torment. Married in 2019, she endured relentless pressure from her husband and in-laws, who seized her salary, bank accounts, and chequebook. “They only wanted a working maid,” she wrote, exposing how her financial independence became a trap. Her in-laws demanded more dowry, while her husband taunted her, eroding her self-worth. Though her family pushed for divorce, Gaurav persuaded her to stay, deepening her entrapment in abuse.

Anvita’s story lays bare a harsh truth: for many Indian women, a job doesn’t guarantee freedom. Societal norms forced her to endure, her career twisted into a tool of exploitation. Her plea to save her son from becoming like his father lingers as a heartbreaking call for reflection.

Police have charged the accused under dowry death and cruelty laws. Her death shines a stark light on the silent struggles women face behind closed doors.
